More on Economy
As a representative of Nevada's fourth congressional district, I have witnessed the severe impact of the pandemic on our hospitality and tourism industry. Although it's encouraging to see more people returning to work, there are still several obstacles to overcome. The lack of affordable childcare is one of the most pressing issues, which is disproportionately affecting women and families. Therefore, it's crucial to invest in a sustainable system that provides accessible options to everyone.
I am writing to express my concern about the targeting of middle-class families by investors who are significantly raising rents, sometimes by more than 30 percent. I agree with Sepela that this practice needs to stop. There should be limitations on how much rent can be increased, and it seems that these investors have gone too far by adding even more.
I am happy to express the success of securing funding for the North Las Vegas Park and Sports Complex, which is undergoing a major renovation to bring it back to its former glory days, and maybe even better than ever before. The goal now is to revive the Cheyenne Sports Complex and make it the central hub for recreation up north once again.

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Low-income renters in the valley may be getting some protection from pricey rent payments. As many look for affordable housing, many have found themselves simply locked out.
Carissa Zepeda says her rent has increased significantly in the last six months.

WASHINGTON — Skyrocketing housing prices, waiting lists and competition from institutional investors are keeping working-class Americans from purchasing homes in the nation’s largest metropolitan markets, including Las Vegas, witnesses told a House committee Wednesday.
It's concerning to hear that rental rates in Las Vegas have increased by almost 30% in the past year, especially since our local economy has yet to fully recover. The hospitality industry, which is the main driver of our economy, is still struggling to reach pre-pandemic levels. 7 out of 10 of the most common jobs in Las Vegas don't pay enough to rent a studio apartment, which means that 70% of hospitality workers, such as culinary workers, bartenders, and servers, can't even afford to rent a place of their own, let alone achieve the American dream of owning a home.
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04), introduced legislation in response to the housing crisis affecting many major metropolitan areas, including Las Vegas. The Housing Oversight and Mitigating Exploitation (HOME) Act of 2022 addresses a trend that is creating artificial hikes in rents and property costs across the country, specifically in underserved communities, affecting Black and Latino families the most, and hurting single mothers trying to provide for their children.

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Jean Robinson doesn’t mind playing hostess.
“This is my humble little abode,” she said allowing more than a dozen strangers into her apartment for a tour.
